When I started this blog, I had visions of writing more football stuff, more often. But I guess lockdown and the pandemic had a different idea.
Whereas some people indulged on booze, food or exercise (in that order?), I massively got into a new fantasy football game called Sorare.
Now I’ve played FPL for as long as I can remember. And still do the Champions League and every World Cup and European Championship. (Showing my age here, but I also vaguely remember an old Telegraph version of the game where you had to physically post in your weekly transfer. Seriously.)
So I’ve always had the fantasy football bug. But this is a little bit different. Let me explain…
Sorare is a global fantasy football game, where you pick 5-a-side teams to compete in twice weekly tournaments.
Like FPL it’s based on real life action, but where Sorare differs is that you buy the player cards to own. And as the name suggests, they’re limited edition.
Only 111 cards of each player are minted each season (100 rare, 10 super rare and 1 unique).
It’s all done on the Blockchain so these cards are digital collectables. You can build up a collection, trade them with other managers, even take them outside of the game if you want.
Over 100 clubs from around the world are officially licensed. PSG, Bayern and Inter Milan have all joined recently. Teams like Juventus and Atletico Madrid have been around a while.
I got involved in Sorare in the summer, and soon got hooked. The prizes are decent, and achievable. You win cards (to keep or sell), plus cash too.
Well, it’s not exactly cash, but Ethereum (ETH) – the second most popular cryptocurrency behind Bitcoin and the currency within the game. ETH makes sense with such a broad range of global managers. It can also be withdrawn and transferred into the currency of your choice.
Now don’t worry if crypto sounds a bit daunting. I didn’t have a Scooby about it at first. To make life easier you can now buy ETH through the site. Or buy players directly with a credit card. There’s also a helpful community on the game’s Discord server.
Enough waffling on. The best way to get into Sorare is to try it for free. Everyone starts with 10 free common cards to get a feel for it. You can play in the Rookie tournament for 8 weeks using these.
After that you might want to buy a few Rares and enter into one of the Division 4 leagues.
It’s worth saying that all tournaments are free to enter – once you’ve bought your cards you can use them for as long as the player’s career, providing they’re in an eligible league (and there are shed-loads of those).
Whatever your strategy, and however you decide to play, sign up using this link: sorare.com/r/reidy
If you buy 5 new cards from auction, then we both get a free rare card. Happy days.
